Where does Torti come from?

I don't claim to be a genetics expert, far from it, but I can tell you about what I have bred, what others have told me and taking from genetic charts available online. With that said, Lets go to Genetics 101

Torti's have "marbled" points, two tone body coats and may or may not have white patches, especially on feet and face. One of Bailey's kittens (see "Fancy Feet" photo above) has a White paw and a light paw in front - a darker paw and a split color paw on back.

GENETICS 101

As far as registered colors, the four accepted "Siamese" colors are Seal, Chocolate, Blue and Lilac.

Chocolate being a dilute form of Seal.
Lilac being a dilute form of Blue.

Red Point and Torti are acknowledged Siamese colors but registered with the extra wording of "Color Point" Siamese.

I am not going into the exact origin of the Red point Siamese but I do know when bred Red to Red they breed true, right down to the baby blues! I believe a 'breed' has to breed true for 5 generations to be accepted by any registry. Remember I am talking COLORS, not pedigrees so don't expect to run out and register your unregistered siamese. Most registries ALSO require a 5 generation pedigree to register a cat.

Back to Genetics:

A Red Point Siamese has a White coat with bright apricot to deep red points AND BLUE EYES.

When a Red is bred to a Red you will get Red kittens, both males and females. These kittens are almost snow white at birth and the 'points' seem to be a bit slower coming in than their darker cousins.
A Red bred to any other color Siamese, will throw the white gene to the female offspring making them Torti, or "marbled" in appearance. Variations of this pattern are surprisingly unpredictable but always fascinatingly beautiful. (is that a real word?)

A Red female bred to a color male:
(Like my Red Bailey to my Blue Wasabi)
Will produce Torti females AND RED MALES.

A Red male bred to a color female:
Will produce Torti females AND REGULAR POINT MALES BUT NO REDS.

Follow me so far?

A Red male bred to a Torti Female can produce Red offspring of either sex but can also produce regular pointed offspring as well. Toss of the coin with this one.

Simply put the Red Points throw a white gene in the Red and Torti.

If your really curious about genetics there is a wonderful breed color chart at Cat Fancier's Association explaining it all.

IN ALL CASES THE BLUE EYES BREED TRUE!
